The island of Ibiza has a long winemaking tradition, as vines have been grown here since the 8th Century BC due to the influence of the Phoenicians, the Greeks and the Romans. What is more, the art of producing homemade wine known as “vi payés”, for personal enjoyment, has been handed down from father to son till this day. This wine with its pungent aroma goes perfectly with the typical Ibizan dishes which you can find all over the island.
The local grape varieties are Monastrell and Garnacha for red and the Malvasía grape for white wines. Wines are produced mainly in San Mateo, Buscastell and San Jose. It is important to know that wines produced on Ibiza carry the official label “Vins de la Terra”
Although there are relatively few wineries on the island, their wines are of excellent quality and they offer interesting guided tours where you can find out a lot about wine production on Ibiza. Below we introduce you to some of Ibiza’s most famous wineries.
